Assistant Director, Principal Investigators and Postdoctoral Fellows

Centre for Neuroscience and Neural Engineering (CNNE)

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)

Shenzhen, China

The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, Shenzhen, China) and The University of Queensland (UQ, Brisbane, Australia) established the joint Centre for Neuroscience and Neural Engineering (CNNE) in January 2020. The mission of the CNNE is to combine multi-disciplinary research teams to foster advances in Neuroscience and Neural Engineering that will dramatically increase the understanding of neuronal circuit computations, drive the development of next-generation in silico computational devices, and enhance the quality of life of Chinese and Australians impacted by disease and damage of the nervous system.

We are looking to appoint an Assistant Director, several independent Principal Investigators (all ranks), and several Postdoctoral Fellows at the CNNE. The incumbents will be predominantly based at SUSTech but will be joint appointed between SUSTech and UQ.

About the SUSTech and UQ

Southern University of Science and Technology, although established only in 2012, is already one of the leading research universities in China. The University ranks 10 in mainland China in the World University Ranking and 1 in mainland China in the Young University Rankings. It also ranks 7 globally according to the Nature Index Young Universities and 2 globally according to the Nature Index Top 25 Rising Universities. SUStech is working towards becoming a world-class university excelling in interdisciplinary research, nurturing innovative talents, entrepreneurship and delivering new knowledge to the world. The University promotes bilingual interactions and teaching, in which lectures and academic seminars are conducted in both English and Mandarin.

The successful candidates will have joint appointment in the Biology Department, SUSTech.  The Department was established in 2012, with the ambitious goal of building a world-class center for biomedical research and education. The department now has a diverse group of 41 faculty members and continues to grow.

University of Queensland (UQ) ranks in the top 50 as measured by the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities. The University also ranks 48 in the QS World University Rankings, 45 in the US News Best Global Universities Rankings, 65 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 55 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. UQ values equity, diversity and inclusion, and seeks to reflect the broader community by attracting and retaining high-quality staff from a range of backgrounds.

SUSTech has long standing research collaboration with UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), which has played a pivotal role in the establishment of the CNNE. This collaboration will underpin the further development of the Centre. Established in 2003, the QBI is a world-renowned leader in neuroscience research and home to more than 450 staff and students, including 43 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, who are focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease.

Assistant Director

To drive the scientific progress and facilitate the operations of the CNNE, we are recruiting an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will be a research program leader. A particular and novel focus of CNNE is the development of high-resolution circuit mapping technologies; consequently, it is planned that the Assistant Director be chosen to direct this integral component of the CNNE. Appointment at the level of Assistant Director is aimed to attract a motivated and high-profile scientist, as well as to ensure that appropriate infrastructure support is provided to the development of high-resolution circuit mapping technologies. We are seeking to appoint a mid-career scientist, with an outstanding published track record in the development and application of high-resolution circuit mapping technologies and demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, especially regarding the successful leadership of international and diverse teams.

The Assistant Director will be expected to 1) lead an internationally competitive scientific program, and 2) facilitate the organization of the CNNE, with a particular emphasis on integration with nascent programs of the Chinese brain initiative and the evolving Australian brain initiative.
