Introduction to Shanghai Maritime University (SMU)
China's higher maritime education originated in Shanghai. In 1909, the Shipping Administration Department of Shanghai Higher Industrial School (Nanyang Public School) of the Ministry of Posts and Communications of the Qing Dynasty set a precedent for higher maritime education in China. Wusong Merchant Marine School was established in 1912, and was renamed Wusong Merchant Marine College in 1933. In 1959, the Ministry of Communications established Shanghai Maritime Institute in Shanghai. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In order to better serve the construction of the Shanghai International Shipping Center and the development of the national shipping industry, in 2008, the main body of Shanghai Maritime University was relocated to Lingang New City (now the Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone) in accordance with the layout adjustment plan of overall universities in Shanghai. In 2019, SMU successfully held a series of celebrations for her 110 anniversary.
SMU is a multi-disciplinary university with the characteristics of shipping, logistics, and oceans, including engineering, management, economics, law, literature, science, and arts. In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement to jointly build SMU.

There is a water training center with a 10,000-ton container teaching practice vessel "Yufeng", and a 48,000-ton bulk teaching practice vessel "Yuming".
SMU was evaluated “outstanding” in the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching quality of the Ministry of Education in 2004 and the evaluation of the English-taught majors by the Ministry of Education in 2006. In 2018, the total annual scientific and technological expenditure reached 370 million yuan. SMU won a number of national scientific research projects and science and technology progress awards at the ministerial or municipal level.
SMU implements a two-level administrative system. At present, the secondary colleges and schools include Merchant Marine College, College of Transportation, School of Economics and Management (including the Asian Cruise Academy), Logistics Engineering College (including Sino-Dutch Mechatronics Engineering College), School of Law, College of Information Engineering, College of Foreign Languages, College of Marine Science and Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences (including Marxism College), Xu Beihong Art College, Institute of Logistics Science and Engineering, Shanghai Advanced Institute of International Shipping. We pursue the coordinated development of talent training, scientific research, and social services. We harbor the state-of-the-art research bases for the national One Way and One Belt Initiative, Shanghai International Shipping Center construction and Shanghai Free Trade Zone construction. We strive to provide business talent support and related intellectual and decision-making support for the national shipping, logistics, and other related maritime and port-related industries.
The history of SMU's economics and management major has a long history, recording the history of higher business education in China's maritime institutions. SEM's predecessor originated from Wuhan Water Transport Engineering College, which was founded in 1956. The Ministry of Transport carried out adjustments of university majors in 1963, and determined that SMU should focus on cultivating senior professionals in water transport economic management. In order to form the new school in Shanghai, the economics and management departments in Wuhan Water Transport Engineering Institute and Dalian Maritime University were integrated into SMU, as a new water transport economics department and a new water transport management department. In 1983, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific jointly held a graduate class to recruit the first graduate student. In 1986, the transportation economics major obtained the right to grant a master's degree. In 1996, the transportation economics discipline became a key discipline of the Ministry of Transportation. In 1996, the first SMU MBA program started, pioneering MBA education in China's maritime field. In 2002, SEM became one of the first 30 EMBA-granting institutions in China, and obtained AMBA certification. In 2006, it obtained a doctoral degree granting right in the second discipline of transportation engineering economics and management. In September 2010, SMU is approved to grant Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree. In 2011, SEM obtained a doctoral degree granting right in management science and engineering. In 2012, two disciplines of management science and engineering, transportation system management and engineering economics obtained Shanghai first-class discipline (Class B) qualifications. In 2014, SEM officially became a member of AACSB, and in 2015 management science and engineering (logistics engineering and management) was selected as the Shanghai Highland Plateau subject, and in 2018 was granted the MPAcc granting authority.
